Band-e-Amir National Park, Afghanistan

From the heart of  Afghanistan to the Bay Area, Qatra Cafe carries a journey of tradition and connection. I immigrated to the United States more than forty years ago and only recently returned to visit our homeland for the first time with my family.

In Afghan culture, offering tea is the first gesture of welcome, an invitation to connection, conversation, and community. To sit together over tea honors tradition and reminds us that even the simplest offerings can carry the deepest meaning. Despite the modest means, every cup and every bite are prepared with intention, using the best ingredients available, and always served with care. Each sip carries love and the reminder that gathering around tea brings people together to nourish the body, calm the mind, and soothe the soul.

Our recent journey to Afghanistan reignited something within me. I returned with a renewed sense of purpose: to recreate that feeling here, a place where people from all walks of life feel seen, welcomed, and nourished.

In the fast-paced life of the Bay area, a cup of tea or a treat can feel like just another item to grab on the go.  In a world full of digital distractions, where I’ve observed over the past 20 years as a mental health professional on how technology can deepen feelings of isolation, Qatra Cafe was created as a place to slow down, share a moment, and reconnect.  I envision Qatra Cafe as a return to my own childhood experiences of love, hospitality, connection, and care, and we hope to offer that same experience to everyone who walks through our doors.
